Horseback Riding

Saddle up and take part in an enjoyable family adventure. We offer trail rides for all levels of riders - beginner, intermediate, advanced. Each ride is approximately one hour from mounting to dismounting. For your safety, each trail ride is accompanied by several experienced wranglers. The terrain is generally hilly, through thick wooded areas, which is why we use western saddles. Pinegrove is home to over 100 horses. Among them are Purebred Arabians, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Appaloosa, Paints and Draft Horses.

For our younger, inexperienced guests, we offer pony rides and our junior wrangler program. We also now offer a hands-on Barn Brats program for guests age 12 to 16 who have some prior horse experience.

Signing up for trail rides:
On the evening of your arrival, you may sign up for the trail rides for your entire stay. You may sign up for one ride per day. At that time, you will advise us of your riding ability. If you wish to ride more than once per day, you may purchase additional individual rides or our Trailblazer Riding Package which includes 3 additional rides per day. Trailblazer Package is limited to a maximum of five days and tickets may not be used for any other riding services.

What to expect during your ride:
New York State Law requires that helmets must be worn by all riders 14 years and younger. Helmets are available for all adult and child riders at the barn.

You will be riding personally selected mounts, chosen for their smooth gaits, gentle nature, and sensitivity to your skill and needs. Our barn staff will assist you with mounting and dismounting your horse in the corral. Basic instructions of how to sit, position your feet, hold the reins, steer and stop your horse, will be given prior to each ride. All riders leave the corral together, and are observed as to their stated ability. If, in the opinion of our staff, it is in your safety to change your riding level, you will be asked to do so before the rides depart on their respective trails. You may receive instruction on the trail, at your request, from any of our wranglers. These skilled riders are here to help you enjoy your ride as well as ensure your safety.

Types of Trail Rides

Minimum age is 7 years old to ride on the trail.

WALK RIDE - Our most popular ride! Suitable for all levels of riders ranging from beginners to experienced. This trail ride is a lovely walk through the woods that is slow enough to enjoy the natural beauty of your surroundings. It is ideal for first time riders or anyone that wants a relaxing, comfortable ride. 1 Ticket

INTERMEDIATE RIDE - This ride consists of walking and trotting. Riders should have approximately 10 hours of experience in the saddle throughout the year. A fun, brisk ride that requires enough experience to be in control of the horse at all times. Riders are permitted to hold onto the saddle horn with their free hand and will be screened by the wranglers at a trot to ensure their safety. Riders that are not ready for the intermediate ride will be taken on a nice walk ride. 1 Ticket

ADVANCED RIDE - A fast-paced, energetic ride for experienced riders only. This ride consists of walking, trotting & cantering. Riders must be in control of their horse at all times and should not have to hold onto the saddle for balance. All advanced riders will be screened for safety at a canter. 1 Ticket

Horseback Riding Tips

Remember, the more relaxed you are in the saddle, the more comfortable your ridewill be.

SIMPLE DO’S & DON'TS

• Do stay in single file at all times.

• Do always watch your wranglers. A raised hand signals all to stop. Slow your horse to a walk or halt.

• Do sit relaxed in your saddle – not stiff.

• Do Not smoke on the ride.

• Do Not carry bulky or loose objects that could fall and scare a horse.

• Do Not ride up close to the horse in front of you. Stay one horse length apart. When you crowd the horse in front he thinks he is going to be bitten or stepped on, and the natural thing for him to do is KICK. He is not kicking you, but at your horse because you allowed him to get to close. So for your own safety keep your horse in line and well back.

Love of horses and nature has been our reason for being at Pinegrove. We hope you will share with us the wonder and beauty of what nature has given us all. Take time to "Smell the Roses" enjoy your children, and have a wonderful time.
